HYDRA is an active multichannel high resolution imaging radar with Inverse Synthetic Aperture radar (ISAR) capability (optionally with DoA or 3D target reconstruction capabilities). It can be used for maritime traffic surveillance, harbour monitoring, airport surface movement surveillance, low flying aerial vehicles surveillance, drones and UAVs detection and vehicular traffic monitoring.
The radar front-end is an X-band direct deramping Linear Frequency Modulated Continuous Waveform radar architecture and it is available in Single (H or V) polarization or fully polarimetric configurations.
An example of HYDRA installation in an maritime scenario
The antenna system consists of one (or two for the full-pol version) transmitting and multiple receiving elements. This configuration allows different applications to be used. For instance, an interferometric approach can be used with three receiving antennas to reconstruct the 3D shape of the target.
In order to achieve a compromise between the coverage and the gain of the antennas, both the transmitting and receiving antennas are characterized by a half power beamwidth of 60° in azimuth and 20° in elevation, and a maximum gain of 13 dBi. The embedded ventilation system ensures a proper thermal dissipation guaranteeing the IP66 enclosure protection.

All the above characteristics makes HYDRA easily installable in all weather, day/night conditions and close to civilian buildings and structures.
The multi-channel configuration, as in the above figure, enables the application of the 3D target reconstruction processing. In particular, this method exploits interferometric ISAR imaging (InISAR) to estimate the heights of the dominant scatterers.
